THEME

The topic of my bachelor's thesis was "Similarities between criminal gangs and the police institution". The difficulty was to present the topic in a scientific and objective manner without any personal opinion. Particularly in terms of design, which is why I decided to use an exhibition as the medium for my practical bachelor's degree, as this way you can attract different audiences and thus also have the opportunity to generate a variety of ways to make the topic accessible to everyone.

EXHIBITION

The concept includes the visual representation of the topic ("commonalities between criminal gangs and the institution of the police") in the form of a completely self-curated exhibition. The exhibition deals with some problems of the police organization, such as abuse of power, transparency and the similarities between the police and criminals in comparison, visualized through illustrations and diagrams. A weapon transfer of an illegal metal knuckleduster and a legally available baton will be on display in a firmly locked display case.

I came across the socially critical topic through a film quote I heard in the 2019 film “The Departed”. Music, especially German-language hip hop and American old school hip hop, also brought me closer to the topic through their lyrics.
The thesis of my bachelor thesis is supported by my own research on the topic, such as current/past events, personal observations and experiences.

This work is not only intended to question the institution of the police, but also to show that the fundamental group structures of criminal gangs and the institution of the police are similar/or frighteningly similar.

An important task of the executive is to uphold the laws, rules and norms that our state sets. But what if the legitimate power is abused? What is the difference between suspected criminals and an armed man in uniform?
